Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan Gough in 1915 in Philadelphia, was a pioneering American jazz and swing singer whose voice shaped the sound of 20th-century music. Raised in Baltimore during the 1920s, she grew up immersed in the rhythms of jazz. As a teenager, she developed her style by singing along to the records of greats like Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong.
